Thankfully, I watched 'Breaking Bad' well after its initial run, so I only heard about the toxic Skyler discourse years later. But yes, that's a key example of how female characters — and especially mothers — were almost always shortchanged in the reign of the antihero.
I truly appreciate the consistent laughs in 'Hacks,' but I wouldn't offer up Debra as a great example of a mom... your point about her realization is interesting, though. Makes me wonder when Season 3 is out! ;-)
And you are so right about 'This is Us.' Rebecca — along with Beth Pearson —may be the sole examples of good moms who are still believable in recent years. I didn't finish the series for a host of reasons, but I do remember appreciating the complexity of Rebecca and Beth, a human reality that never calls into question their devotedness as mothers.
